Art and Heritage

Art and Heritage of First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City, KS, is a Worship Committee project. Its focus is to recognize the beauty of the church’s physical facility while acknowledging memorials established by those who felt a spiritual call to create that beauty. Such expressions of faith have sustained the church’s heritage for 147 years.
Published in May, 2020, it contains 98 pages, over 110 photographs, 7 documents, short audio and video files (available on request). Sample stories are a rose window created in 1940 using stained glass from war-torn Europe, a 1914 film clip of the church under construction, the building’s neoclassic architecture, the 1873 storefront where the church was organized, an ill-timed building proposal doomed by the 1929 stock market crash, a memorial to two members who lost their lives in World War 1, and beautiful stained glass throughout.
